One of the most annoying parts of my previous career in “traditional” media is that I became a hawk for spelling and grammatical errors. When newspapers had a misspelling, I’d gasp. When websites posted with a grammatical error, I would cringe. And now when blogs have BOTH-I want to…well, lets just say I want to hit the “stumble” button on my browser.
Now, you may ask, “Why is that annoying?” Well, having to catch grammatical and spelling errors every day of your life can get to be pretty insane, since those two things say so much about you the person-and my aim was always perfection. Attention to detail is so important and I was never satisfied with those type of errors from anyone else, much less myself!
Of course, not everyone cares, but they should. If I see a misspelling or grammatical error, I am less likely to find your information credible. Now, if it’s a one-time error, I get that…but if I visit your site more than three times and the same error exists, I’ll probably move on.
Just one recommendation: do a proof-read of your own work before you hit “publish post”. It’s a good carry-over from “traditional” media to the “new media” landscape.
I totally agree. I spent several years as an editor, and I can no longer read anything without editing it. I edit cereal boxes, billboard, blogs … can't help it.
Not to say there are not typos and that we are not all human. I find them in my own work occasionally and it makes me cringe.
But like you said, just don't let it happen a lot …
(now to proofread this comment before I hit publish)
As you may recall, MEA was so IN to correct spelling, word choice, grammar, etc. She would be so pleased to know you are the one with the talent and interest to carry on the tradition! Go, Cory! OOOps, did I just misspell Corey???? Shame shame.
